Trump Vows To Punish Putin, Russia

President Donald Trump vowed that he’s ready to hit Russia and its president, Vladimir Putin, with a new round of sanctions amid its largest air strike since it invaded Ukraine in 2022.

Trump replied yes when asked if he was ready to move to the “second stage” of sanctions against Russia while speaking to reporters on the White House lawn ahead of his flight to New York City for the U.S. Open Final Round on Sunday (September 7). The president had previously threatened to impose sanctions and tariffs prior to the two meeting for a summit in Alaska last month.

Putin was later reported to be demanding that Ukraine surrender the eastern Donbas region, renounce desires to join NATO and remain neutral and keep Western troops out of the war-torn country, three sources familiar with his thinking confirmed to Reuters on August 22). The Russian sources said Putin had laid out territorial demands in June 2024, which require Ukraine to cede the four provinces — Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia — since occupied by Russia during the three-and-a-half-year war.

Trump also met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European allies on August 22, with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz telling reporters he was optimistic about Putin and Zelenskyy potentially having a meeting in-person after Trump called Putin during his meeting with Zelenskyy and his allies. Russia unleashed at least 810 drones and decoys during its overnight attack on Ukraine, targeting the country’s central government building in Kyiv, which resulted in at least four deaths and 44 injuries.
