Trump Threatens Secondary Tariffs On Russia

President Donald Trump publicly threatened secondary tariffs targeting Russia if the Kremlin doesn’t reach a ceasefire deal with Ukraine within 50 days during a meeting with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte at the White House on Monday (July 14).

“We’re going to be doing very severe tariffs if we don’t have a deal in 50 days,” Trump said via the Associated Press noting they would be “secondary tariffs.”

Secondary tariffs are trade barriers where a country imposes tariffs from countries that trade with a targeted nation.

“I use trade for a lot of things,” Trump added. “But it’s great for settling wars.”

Trump’s threat of secondary tariffs followed his announcement that the U.S. would send Patriot missiles to Ukraine in order to help its defense against Russian attacks Sunday (July 13) night.

The president didn’t specify how many Patriot missiles he planned to send but claimed the European Union was “going to pay us 100% for that, and that’s the way we want it” via the Associated Press. Russia has pounded several Ukrainian cities, including its capital, Kyiv, with drones, as well as cruise and ballistic missiles, having killed 232 people and wounded 1,343 during the month of June, the highest monthly civilian casualty rate during the past three years of war.
