Several members of President-elect Donald Trump‘s inner circle are reportedly signaling that he could make Election Day a national holiday in which employers are mandated to give their workers paid time off, the Daily Mail reports.
Vivek Ramaswamy, who immediately endorsed Trump after dropping out of the Republican primary and is expected to be considered for a possible administration position, has publicly supported making Election Day a federal holiday, as well as reverting to paper ballots over machines and requiring government issued identification to match the voter file as part of an overhaul to the election system.
“What I care about is how are we actually going to fix it in a lasting way,” Ramaswamy said when discussing U.S. election changes during an interview with former FOX News anchor Tucker Carlson via the Daily Mail. “I think we can do this nationally, where you make election a national holiday, put it on a single day – at least for a federal election.”
Podcaster Joe Rogan, who interviewed and endorsed Trump just prior to the election, has also publicly stated his preference for Election Day becoming a federal holiday, citing what he referred to as “anomalies” in the 2020 election.
“How about we have an election – national election holiday. We could do with one more holiday,” Rogan said last week while interviewing fellow podcaster Theo Von, who also interviewed Trump during his campaign.
‘Celebrate it, it’s a great day. People can rejoice. It would take a lot of stress off people, too,’ Von responded.
“It should be a paid holiday,” Rogan said. “You should expect to have to pay your employees on the day that election comes because everybody should be able to go vote. That’s what it should be. We’ll talk to Trump about it. Make it a nationally mandated holiday.”
