President Donald Trump issued a warning to Russian President Vladimir Putin after he publicly boasted about the Kremlin’s new “invincible” nuclear missile.
“They know we have a nuclear submarine, the greatest in the world, right off their shore,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on Monday ahead of his trip to Japan via the New York Post.
Trump’s response came hours after Putin claimed that Russia had an 8,700-mile, 15-hour test flight for its “unique” nuclear-powered missile, which it called the “flying Chernobyl,” claiming it was capable of hitting targets in the United States. Putin said the Burevestnik missile was “unlike anything else in the world” while delivering comments to Russian state media on Sunday (October 26).
“We need to identify potential uses and begin preparing the infrastructure for deploying this weapon in our armed forces,” he added.
Trump claimed that the United States had even more power missiles in his response on Monday.
“We test missiles all the time, but you know, we do have a submarine, a nuclear submarine. We don’t need to go 8,000 miles,” he said via the New York Post.
“They’re not playing games with us. We’re not playing games with them either,” Trump added before once again demanding Putin end his yearslong war with Ukraine.
“I don’t think it’s an appropriate thing for Putin to be saying. By the way, he ought to get the war ended. A war that should have taken one week is now in its, soon, fourth year. That’s what he ought to do instead of testing missiles,” he continued.
Last Tuesday (October 21), the White House confirmed that Trump’s previously scheduled meeting with Putin in Budapest had been canceled with no plans to meet “in the immediate future” in a statement obtained by ABC News. Trump had previously announced that he and Putin would meet in Hungary this week in a post shared on his Truth Social account following their phone conversation on October 16.
Trump and Putin had previously met for a summit in Anchorage, Alaska, in August, which was followed by Zelenskyy and other European leaders meeting at the White House days later.
