Former President Donald Trump defended a female secret service agent for “bravely” shielding him during an assassination attempt after she was publicly criticized.
“There was great bravery displayed… Every one of them. There wasn’t one that was slow,” Trump told his supporters during a rally in St. Cloud, Minnesota, on Saturday (July 27) (h/t the New York Post). “There was a woman to my right shielding me. A beautiful person. She was shielding me with everything she could.”
Many questioned why the much shorter female secret service agent was the one shielding Trump, whose height is listed at 6-foot-3, during the incident at his rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13.
“She got criticized by the fake news because she wasn’t tall enough. She was criticized and she was so brave,” Trump said.
“She was shielding me with everything. She wanted to take a bullet,” he added as the crowd cheered.
Trump’s right ear was grazed during the shooting and he was seen yelling “fight” to his supporters while being evacuated from the rally by Secret Service members. One spectator, identified as Corey Comperatore, 50, was killed during the incident while two others, David Dutch, 57, of New Kensington, and James Copenhaver, 74, were initially critically wounded but later upgraded to stable condition.
The shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, was killed by Secret Service agents immediately after opening fire. New bodycam video footage confirmed that Secret Service agents identified Crooks as a suspicious person before the assassination attempt but “lost sight of him.”
Trump officially accepted the Republican presidential nomination during the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on July 18.
