Trump Calls Himself ‘Acting President Of Venezuela’

President Donald Trump shared a post referring to himself as “acting president of Venezuela” on his Truth Social account Monday (January 12).

The post included a screenshot of his Wikipedia page altered to list “acting president of Venezuela, incumbent January 2026,” under Trump’s official 2025 portrait. U.S. troops captured Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, on January 3 and Trump claimed that Washington would run the country until there was a “safe, proper and judicious transition” in place.

The president publicly claimed “we’re in charge,” though Secretary of State Marco Rubio and White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt have insisted that the U.S. is using “leverage” over Venezuela as it faces interim leadership. Trump also recently told the New York Times that he expected the United States to continue running Venezuela and extracting its rich oil for years during an exclusive interview.

Delcy Rodríguez, who served as vice president under Maduro and has since been sworn in as interim president, initially rejected claims that she would work with the Trump administration but has since been more open to the concept publicly.

“We invite the US government to collaborate with us on an agenda of cooperation oriented towards shared development within the framework of international law to strengthen lasting community coexistence,” Rodríguez said in an Instagram post shared on January 4.

Trump’s Wikipedia page didn’t actually have “Acting President of Venezuela” listed under his portrait as of Monday.
