President-elect Donald Trump announced his selection of Karoline Leavitt as White House press secretary for his upcoming administration.
Leavitt, 27, worked as an assistant press secretary for the first Trump administration, as well as the national press secretary on his campaign, and will become the youngest person to ever hold the title of White House press secretary once she assumes the role in January.
“Karoline Leavitt did a phenomenal job as the National Press Secretary on my Historic Campaign, and I am pleased to announce she will serve as White House Press Secretary,” Trump said in a statement obtained by NBC News. “Karoline is smart, tough, and has proven to be a highly effective communicator. I have the utmost confidence she will excel at the podium, and help deliver our message to the American People as we Make America Great Again.”
Leavitt re-shared the statement announcing her role on her own X account.
“Thank you, President Trump, for believing in me. I am humbled and honored. Let’s MAGA!” she wrote.
Trump had four press secretaries during his first presidency, but frequently preferred to speak directly to the public at his rallies and social media posts, as well as his own briefings, rather than through a public representative facing the press corps.
“I will give you total access and you’ll have a lot of press briefings and you’ll have, uh, from me,” Trump said when asked in August if he planned to once again have regular briefings if elected again via NBC News.
“Probably they’ll do something. If it’s not daily, it’s going to be a lot. You’ll have more than you want,” he added when asked about the press secretary position in a potential second administration at the time.
