Trump Administration Releases New Trove Of JFK Assassination Files

The Trump administration has released thousands of previously classified records related to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. This release, directed by President Donald Trump, includes approximately 80,000 pages of documents, many of which had been redacted until now. The records are now available online and at the National Archives in College Park, Maryland.

According to CNN, the documents were made public on Tuesday (March 18) and include files that had been previously withheld for reasons of national security. Despite the release, experts like Tom Samoluk, a former deputy director of the Assassination Records Review Board, suggest that the documents do not contain any new revelations that would alter the understanding of Kennedy’s assassination. The consensus remains that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone.

Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard stated that while most records have been released without redactions, some remain withheld under court seal or for grand jury secrecy. The National Archives is working with the Justice Department to expedite the unsealing of these remaining documents.

The release is part of an ongoing effort to make the JFK assassination records fully public, a process that began with the JFK Assassination Records Collection Act of 1992. Despite the release, some documents remain classified to protect the identities of confidential sources.
