Trump Administration Moves to Pull Funds from CA Rail Project

The Trump administration announced plans to withdraw $4 billion in federal funding from California’s high-speed rail project, citing a lack of a “viable path” to completion. A recent investigation by the Department of Transportation highlighted budget shortfalls, missed deadlines, and misleading ridership projections as key issues. The Los Angeles Times reported that the Federal Railroad Administration’s acting administrator, Drew Feeley, accused the California High-Speed Rail Authority (CHSRA) of relying on “the false hope of an unending spigot of Federal taxpayer dollars.”

The project, which aims to connect San Francisco and Los Angeles, has faced numerous challenges since its inception. Originally estimated at $33 billion, the budget has ballooned to over $100 billion, with construction limited to a 171-mile stretch in the Central Valley. CNBC reported that the rail authority has 37 days to respond to the findings or risk losing the federal grants.

Despite the setbacks, the CHSRA remains committed to completing the project. A spokesperson stated that they plan to “correct the record” in their response to the Federal Railroad Administration. The authority has also emphasized the importance of public-private partnerships and state funding to move forward.

The project has been a topic of debate, with some state officials supporting its continuation while others, like State Sen. Tony Strickland, call it a failure. According to Reuters, the Trump administration is not seeking repayment of past federal funds but is considering reallocating future funds to other projects.
