Trump Administration Allows 17 Relatives of ‘El Chapo’ To Enter California

Seventeen family members of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, the infamous drug kingpin, were escorted into California from Mexico last week. This move was confirmed by Mexico’s Security Secretary, Omar García Harfuch, who stated that the crossing was part of a negotiation between Ovidio Guzmán López, El Chapo’s son, and the Trump administration. Ovidio Guzmán López, who was extradited to the United States in 2023, is one of the leaders of a Sinaloa Cartel faction. Rumors suggest he may plead guilty to avoid trial for drug trafficking charges.

According to García Harfuch, the family members’ entry into the U.S. was likely linked to a cooperation agreement between Guzmán López and U.S. authorities. He noted that Guzmán López had been providing information on other criminal organizations, which might be part of the deal. García Harfuch also mentioned that none of the family members are wanted by Mexican authorities, and he urged the U.S. to share information with Mexican prosecutors.

The U.S. Attorney General’s Office recently charged several top cartel leaders with “narcoterrorism,” following the Trump administration’s classification of some cartels as foreign terrorist organizations. During a press conference, U.S. Attorney Adam Gordon for the Southern District of California warned cartel leaders, including those from the Sinaloa Cartel, that they are now targets of U.S. law enforcement efforts.
