Truck Driver Charged With Homicide After Crash Kills 8, Including 5 Kids

Kane Aaron Hammock, a 33-year-old truck driver, faces multiple charges after a fiery crash on Interstate 85 in Jackson County, Georgia, that killed eight members of the same family, including five children. The accident occurred on Monday (October 13) when Hammock’s semitruck collided with a Dodge Grand Caravan, causing a fiery multi-vehicle crash. The Georgia Department of Public Safety charged Hammock with eight counts of vehicular homicide in the second degree and one count of feticide by vehicle in the second degree.

The crash happened around 4:10 p.m. in the northbound lanes of I-85, about 62 miles northeast of Atlanta. The impact of the collision caused a “chain reaction” involving four additional vehicles. The van burst into flames, and all seven occupants were pronounced dead at the scene. An eighth victim was later found at the crash site.

Family members identified the victims as Kenia Ramirez, Darwin Ventura, their child Kayle, and Kenia’s mother, Sonia Maribel Ramirez, along with her children Justin, Andy, Natali, and Evan. The children were aged between two and sixteen. The family also mentioned that Kenia was expecting another baby, pending confirmation from an autopsy.

In addition to the homicide charges, Hammock faces charges for following too closely, distracted driving, and operating a vehicle without a current registration. The Georgia State Patrol and the National Transportation Safety Board have launched an investigation into the crash.
