Transportation Department Revokes Approval Of 13 Mexican Airline Routes

The Trump administration has revoked approval for 13 Mexican airline routes into the United States, citing Mexico’s alleged violations of the 2015 U.S.-Mexico Air Transport Agreement. According to Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy, Mexico illegally canceled and froze U.S. carrier flights for three years without facing any consequences. Duffy’s new order will cut 13 current or planned routes by Mexican carriers into the U.S., as reported by Fox Business.

The affected routes involve airports servicing Mexico City. The Department of Transportation noted that Mexican carriers have continued to add new routes and services between Mexico City and the U.S., despite ongoing issues. Secretary Duffy emphasized that the U.S. will hold Mexico accountable until it honors its commitments. “No country should be able to take advantage of our carriers, our market, and our flyers without repercussions,” Duffy said.

The Department of Transportation also proposed prohibiting Mexican passenger airlines from transporting belly cargo between Mexico City and the U.S., which would take effect 108 business days after finalization. According to the Department of Transportation, Mexico has not complied with the bilateral agreement since 2022, when it rescinded U.S. passenger carriers’ slots and forced U.S. all-cargo carriers to relocate operations. Mexico claimed these actions were temporary to alleviate congestion at Benito Juárez International Airport, but the promised improvements have not materialized.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed disagreement with the Trump administration’s decision and plans to request a meeting between Mexico’s foreign minister and Secretary Duffy to discuss the issue.
