TMZ DC Expands to Washington to Redefine Political Coverage

Washington just got a lot more Hollywood.

The celebrity news powerhouse TMZ is officially planting its flag in the nation’s capital with the launch of TMZ DC. TMZ leaders say the goal is to bring its signature, paparazzi-style reporting to politics. And according to Co-Managing Editor and reporter Charlie Cotton, the goal is simple: make Washington more accessible, more human, and more watchable.

In a conversation with KFI Live host Heather Brooker, Cotton explained that TMZ DC is leaning into what it does best, unscripted moments. Think lawmakers caught off guard in Capitol hallways, candid travel photos, and unexpected interviews that reveal a more personal side of power players.

That approach is already turning heads. TMZ DC has captured viral images of politicians outside Washington during major political moments and is even getting recognition inside official spaces, including a recent Pentagon briefing where the outlet was acknowledged as part of the press corps.

The timing may be no coincidence. With politics and pop culture increasingly intertwined and public trust in institutions at historic lows, Cotton says there’s a growing appetite for coverage that cuts through traditional messaging. TMZ’s style, long criticized and celebrated for pushing boundaries, is now being applied to Capitol Hill.

Still, the expansion raises questions. Critics point to TMZ’s history of aggressive tactics and blurred journalistic lines, including rumors about paying for tips. But supporters argue the outlet is exposing real, relatable moments that traditional media often misses.

For Cotton, the mission isn’t to replace legacy outlets, it’s to offer something different. In a media landscape where attention is currency, TMZ DC is betting that personality-driven, fast-moving coverage can bring new audiences into the political conversation.

And if Washington is now part Hollywood, TMZ clearly wants a front-row seat.
