Thundering ‘Boom’ Heard Across Ohio May Have Been From A Meteor

A loud boom rattled neighborhoods near Columbus, Ohio, over the weekend, and the National Weather Service believes a meteor may be to blame.

A doorbell camera in Pickerington, Ohio, captured a fireball streaking across the night sky on Saturday (March 14) at around 10:35 p.m. The object is believed to have been a meteor moving fast enough to trigger a sonic boom as it entered Earth’s atmosphere.

Kristopher Maki, a resident of Pickerington, shared the footage after he and others in the area heard the thunderous sound. In a Facebook post, Maki wrote: “We were laying in bed winding down for the evening and heard a loud sonic boom. If you were in Pickerington and heard it around 10:35, this was it. Turn up the volume on this one.”

The video shows a bright flash of light disappearing behind homes in the suburban neighborhood, followed by a deep, rumbling noise. The sighting quickly spread across social media, with multiple people outside Columbus reporting the same flash and boom.

The American Meteor Society has not yet officially logged the incident, according to WSYX-TV News.

Authorities have not confirmed whether any debris from the meteor reached the ground. The American Meteor Society is expected to review the reports and may update its records as more information becomes available.
