A three-year-old girl is recovering in the hospital after she was attacked in her tent by a black bear. The girl was with her family at a private campground near Red Lodge in Carbon County, Montana, on Sunday (August 11) when a bear wandered into the area just before 10 p.m.
The Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife, and Parks said the bear was attracted to the campsite by unsecured food items.
The girl survived the attack and was rushed to a hospital in Billings, which is about 60 miles away.
Officials evacuated the campsite and began tracking the bear. On Monday, they announced they had captured and euthanized the bear. While officials are confident they found the bear involved in the attack, they are keeping the campground closed until Tuesday afternoon as they continue their investigation.
“FWP believes it was the bear involved in the incident but is continuing with capture efforts at the site until tomorrow afternoon for due diligence,” the agency said on Facebook.
Authorities did not provide details about the young girl’s injuries or her condition.
