Three of the ten inmates who escaped from a New Orleans jail have been recaptured, while authorities continue the search for the remaining seven. The inmates broke out of the Orleans Parish Prison early Friday morning (May 16) by exploiting a hole in a cell wall behind a toilet. They used blankets to scale a fence and fled across a nearby interstate.
Kendall Myles, Robert Moody, and Dkenan Dennis were apprehended by Friday evening. Louisiana State Police transported the recaptured inmates to a secure facility outside New Orleans. One of the recaptured inmates exhibited hostile behavior during transfer, requiring special precautions by law enforcement.
The search for the other seven escapees continues, with a $7,000 reward offered for information leading to their capture.
Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson suspects that the escapees had help from inside the jail. She highlighted ongoing issues with defective locks and inadequate infrastructure, which she has previously raised with officials. The escape went unnoticed for over seven hours, with no guard present in the cell pod at the time.
The escapees include individuals charged with serious crimes, such as Derrick Groves, who was convicted of murder. Authorities are working with local, state, and federal agencies to locate the remaining fugitives.
