Three Dead, One Missing After Boat Sinks In New York

The U.S. Coast Guard and New York first responders are searching for a missing person after a boat carrying six people capsized near Breezy Point, Queens, on Sunday (February 23). Three people were confirmed dead, while two others were hospitalized. The search began after the Coast Guard received a notification at 12:04 p.m. from New York City 911 operators about a vessel taking on water in the Ambrose Channel.

Rescue teams, including the Coast Guard, New York Police Department (NYPD), and Fire Department of New York (FDNY), quickly responded to the scene. They deployed three rescue boats and an MH-65 helicopter to assist in the rescue efforts. Five individuals were pulled from the water, four of whom were unresponsive. Two were airlifted to Staten Island University Hospital, while the others were taken to Coast Guard Station Sandy Hook for emergency treatment. Tragically, three of the rescued individuals were later pronounced dead; one remains in critical condition, and another is stable.

The missing person’s identity, along with those of the other passengers, has not been released. The vessel involved was a Grady-White boat, known for fishing and coastal cruising. The cause of the capsizing is still under investigation, and authorities are continuing their search for the missing individual in the cold waters, which were around 36 degrees Fahrenheit.

Boating accidents are relatively rare in the area due to strict safety measures, but the incident highlights the dangers of cold water. Sunday’s weather was mild but cold enough to put passengers at risk of hypothermia upon entering the water.

The Coast Guard, along with local authorities, continues to investigate the incident and search for the missing person. The NYPD detective mentioned that the investigation is ongoing, and more details will be released as they become available.
