Chinese automaker BYD has surpassed Tesla to become the world’s largest seller of electric vehicles (EVs) for the first time. According to 2025 data released by both companies, BYD’s sales of battery-powered cars increased nearly 28% to 2.26 million units. Meanwhile, Tesla reported delivering 1.64 million vehicles, marking an 8% decrease from 2024 and the second consecutive year of declining sales.
This achievement marks a significant milestone for BYD, a company that Tesla CEO Elon Musk once dismissed in a 2011 Bloomberg interview, laughing at their products and stating, “I don’t think they have a great product.” However, BYD’s growth and success have proven otherwise, as the company has capitalized on the increasing global demand for electric vehicles.
Tesla’s decline in sales comes amid intensified competition, particularly from Chinese EV manufacturers, and challenges related to CEO Elon Musk’s controversial political statements. Despite these setbacks, Tesla’s stock has recently rebounded, reaching an all-time high of $489.88, following news of the company’s testing of driverless vehicles in Austin, Texas.
As the competition in the EV market continues to heat up, both BYD and Tesla are expected to push forward with new innovations and strategies to maintain and grow their market positions.
