A 17-year-old boy was fatally shot by police in Aurora, Colorado, on Thursday night (September 18) after he called 911 on himself, threatening to shoot officers and a nearby gas station. The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. MDT near a business in the 200 block of South Havana Street. Aurora Police Chief Todd Chamberlain stated that the teenager claimed to have a gun and intended to “shoot up the area.”
Upon arrival, officers attempted to subdue the suspect using rubber projectiles, but these measures failed to stop him. The teenager charged at the officers, prompting one officer to open fire, resulting in the teen’s death. Chief Chamberlain confirmed that no weapon was found on the suspect, emphasizing that the officers were responding to the perceived threat of a weapon.
The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on paid administrative leave while an external law enforcement agency investigates the incident. Sentinel Colorado reported that the confrontation took place outside a Conoco gas station, where someone inside had also called 911, reporting the teen’s alarming behavior.
This tragic event unfolded just a few miles from the site of the 2012 Aurora movie theater shooting, adding to the community’s history of violence.
