A teen driver killed a Texas mother and her 7-year-old child after she plowed through their home in the middle of the night, according to the Stephenville Police Department and FOX 4.
Gracie Yates, 18, was charged with two counts of criminally negligent homicide, according to jail records reviewed by Law & Crime, for an alleged crash into the bedroom of Barbara Rocha, 49, and Alex Aaron Rocha, 7, in Stephenville just after 3:20 a.m. on Sunday (March 22). The mother and son both died from injuries sustained despite life-saving efforts from first responders, police confirmed.
“‘All I heard is a crash, I went in the room, and all you can hear is my little brother screaming and my mom praying,’” said Raul Rocha, who recounted what his older sibling told him he witnessed via FOX 4. “That’s what he said … I have that stuck in the back of my head right now.”
“I never imagined this to happen to me. I never imagined losing my mom. My mom does not deserve this,” he added. “She was so sweet. She always cared about us. She cared about anybody around her.”
A GoFundMe launched to help the Rocha family alleged that a “drunk driver” was responsible for the mother and child’s deaths.
“Recently, a drunk driver crashed through Alfredo’s house, taking the lives of his beloved wife and son. In an instant, Alfredo lost his family and the place he called home,” the GoFundMe statement reads.
“Alfredo and his family are good people who did not deserve to have this tragedy happen to them because of a drunk driver,” the statement continued.
Yates was released from custody on a $14,500 bond Tuesday (March 24), according to court records obtained by Law & Crime and an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
