The debate over affordable housing in Los Angeles has intensified following a controversial remark by Joe Lonsdale, co-founder of Palantir Technologies. Lonsdale, who is also a board member of Rick Caruso’s wildfire foundation Steadfast LA, compared the inclusion of affordable housing in the Pacific Palisades to a “crack den” on X, formerly known as Twitter. His comment was in response to a headline from the Washington Examiner, which claimed that L.A. law mandates affordable housing in rebuilt residences after the Palisades Fire.
Billionaire developer Rick Caruso, a former mayoral candidate, has voiced concerns about the push for affordable housing in the area, arguing that it could hinder residents’ ability to rebuild their homes. Caruso stated, “Now is not the time for outside groups with no ties to the area to slow down the ability of people to rebuild their homes by trying to impose their agenda,” as reported by the Los Angeles Times.
The issue of how affordable housing and related policies will be managed remains unresolved, with local and state officials still deliberating. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass’s recovery czar, Steve Soboroff, indicated support for more apartments in the Palisades but emphasized that the focus is on rebuilding, not rethinking the approach.
