Tatiana Schlossberg, Granddaughter Of JFK, Dead At 35

Environmental journalist Tatiana Schlossberg, the granddaughter of late former President John F. Kennedy, has died at the age of 35 following a battle with terminal cancer, her family confirmed in a statement to the Associated Press on Tuesday (December 30).

“Our beautiful Tatiana passed away this morning. She will always be in our hearts,” the statement reads.

In November, Schlossberg, the daughter of Caroline Kennedy and Edwin Schlossberg, penned the essay, A Battle With My Blood, for the New Yorker revealing she was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia with a rare mutation, mostly seen in older people, in May 2024. The then-34-year-old had just given birth to her second child when her doctor noticed a high white blood cell count.

Schlossberg said she underwent rounds of chemotherapy, two stem cell transplants and participated in clinical trials, noting that her doctor told her “he could keep me alive for a year, maybe,” in the essay. Schlossberg was also critical of polices pushed by her mother’s cousin, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., in the essay, which she said hurt cancer patients like her, echoing her mother’s previous public urging of senators to reject his confirmation.

“As I spent more and more of my life under the care of doctors, nurses, and researchers striving to improve the lives of others, I watched as Bobby cut nearly a half billion dollars for research into mRNA vaccines, technology that could be used against certain cancers,” the essay states.

Schlossenger had previously worked as a reporter for the New York Times‘ Science section covering climate change and the environment and authored the 2019 book Inconspicuous Consumption: The Environmental Impact You Don’t Know You Have, which was awarded the Rachel Carson Environment Book Award by the Society of Environmental Journalists in 2020.
