Suspected Fort Stewart Gunman Identified As Active Duty Soldier

The suspected gunman in the Fort Stewart shooting has been identified as Quornelius Radford, an active-duty soldier and automated logistics sergeant. According to Brigadier General John Lubas, commanding general of the 3rd Infantry Division, Radford is in custody following the incident on Wednesday (August 6).

The shooting took place in the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area of the base, where Radford allegedly used his personal handgun to shoot five fellow soldiers. All victims are in stable condition and expected to survive, with three requiring surgery. The soldiers received initial treatment on-site before being transferred to Winn Army Community Hospital and Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah for further care.

The shooting prompted a brief lockdown at the base, located about 40 miles southwest of Savannah, Georgia. The base was alerted to the active shooter situation just before 11 a.m., and Radford was apprehended at 11:35 a.m.

“Soldiers in the area that witnessed the shooting immediately and without hesitation tackled the soldier, subdued him. That allowed law enforcement to then take him into custody,” Lubas said at a news conference.

The motive behind the shooting remains unknown, and the Army is conducting an investigation. President Donald Trump and Secretary Pete Hegseth have been briefed on the situation, and the FBI is assisting in the investigation.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp expressed his support for the victims and their families.

Fort Stewart is the largest Army post east of the Mississippi River and home to the 3rd Infantry Division. The base has since given an “all-clear” signal, indicating no ongoing threat to the community.
