The suspect in the fatal shooting of San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputy Andrew Nuñez has been identified as Angelo Jose Saldivar, a 47-year-old resident of San Bernardino. The incident occurred on Monday when Deputy Nuñez, 28, responded to a domestic violence call in Rancho Cucamonga. Saldivar allegedly shot Nuñez, who sustained a gunshot wound to the head and was later pronounced dead at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center.
Following the shooting, Saldivar fled the scene on a motorcycle, leading authorities on a high-speed chase along the 210 Freeway. The pursuit ended when an off-duty deputy intervened, causing Saldivar to crash. He was taken into custody and remains hospitalized. Formal charges, including murder, are expected to be filed soon, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.
Deputy Nuñez, a six-year veteran of the department, is survived by his wife, their two-year-old daughter, and another child on the way. In honor of his service, flags are flying at half-staff across California, as ordered by Governor Gavin Newsom. A candlelight vigil is scheduled for Wednesday at the Rancho Cucamonga Civic Center to remember Deputy Nuñez and support his family.
The community has rallied around Nuñez’s family, with a donation page set up by the Peace Officers Research Association of California to assist his wife, Roxy, who is a stay-at-home mom. Sheriff Shannon Dicus described Nuñez as a “wonderful father” and “wonderful deputy sheriff,” reflecting on the impact he had on the community he served for five years.
