Suspect in East Hollywood Crash Has ‘Extensive’ Criminal History

Fernando Ramirez, 29, is accused of driving into a crowd outside a popular East Hollywood club early Saturday, injuring at least 36 people. According to the LAPD, Ramirez, who has a lengthy criminal history, was previously convicted of felony battery and was on parole at the time of the incident.

The crash occurred after Ramirez was ejected from the Vermont Hollywood club. He returned in a vehicle, hitting street vendors and clubgoers, resulting in multiple injuries, including serious fractures and lacerations. At least 23 people were hospitalized. Bystanders pulled Ramirez from his car and attacked him before he was shot by an unknown assailant. LAPD Captain Ben Fernandes confirmed Ramirez was in stable condition after surgery and was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.

Ramirez’s criminal record includes 11 cases over the past 11 years, with convictions for battery, resisting arrest, and assault with great bodily injury. In 2020, he was sentenced to four years in prison for a hate crime and battery, but an appeals court later overturned part of the verdict. Ramirez also has pending charges for driving under the influence and domestic battery.

The LAPD is searching for the shooter, described as a Latino male wearing a blue Dodgers jacket. The club expressed sadness over the incident and is cooperating with law enforcement to hold Ramirez accountable.
