GLENDALE (CNS) – Police in Glendale Wednesday were investigating a crash at the end of a short pursuit that left a wanted parolee dead.
The crash occurred about 11:15 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection Verdugo Road and Wilson Avenue as police were chasing a stolen vehicle suspect, according to the Glendale Police Department.
The chase started at Acacia Avenue and Chevy Chase Drive when the driver — later identified as 51-year-old Shawn Justin Towne of Los Angeles — failed to yield to officers, according to police Sgt. Jose Barajas.
“The pursuit lasted less than two minutes and covered approximately one mile,” the sergeant said. “During that time, the suspect disregarded multiple traffic signals as (the vehicle) traveled eastbound on Acacia Avenue and northbound on Verdugo Road.”
Towne’s vehicle collided with a car at Verdugo and Wilson before crashing into a utility pole, Barajas said.
Officers found Towne unresponsive and attempted to revive him. Glendale Fire Department personnel took him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Barajas said.
Video from the scene showed a dark-colored sedan with front-end damage and a gray SUV with its rear right quarter wrapped around a utility pole.
Police said Towne was alone in the SUV and no other injuries were reported.
Towne had an outstanding arrest warrant and was on active parole, Barajas said.
