Surprise Wall Blocks Marina del Rey Bike Trail Access

In Marina del Rey, a surprise wall has blocked a long-used access point to the Marvin Braude Bike Trail, causing frustration among local cyclists and residents. The wall, constructed in late July, replaced a door-sized gap in a fence that connected Yvonne Burke Park to a Ralph’s supermarket parking lot. This path was a popular shortcut for cyclists and pedestrians accessing the 21-mile beachfront trail. Now, users must navigate Lincoln Boulevard, which has a speed limit of 35 mph and no bike lane, to reach the trail via Admiralty at Bali Way.

The Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors (DBH) stated they were not informed about the wall’s construction, which was undertaken by Bay View Management. This company oversees properties near Burke Park and reportedly built the wall to prevent public access through private property. The wall’s construction has sparked community backlash, with complaints, a change.org petition, and social media discussions highlighting the issue.

Residents of nearby condominium complexes, such as Regatta Seaside, Azzurra, and Cove, have expressed dissatisfaction with the closure. Some residents believe that the wall was built without considering the community’s needs, and they are hopeful for a resolution that restores access. The County is working with the City of Los Angeles to address the situation and maintain public access to Burke Park through other entry points.
