Matt Biolos, a renowned surfboard shaper from San Clemente, California, has filed a lawsuit against pop star Lady Gaga over the use of the word “Mayhem” in her latest album and merchandise. Biolos, who co-founded the surf brand Lost International, claims that Gaga’s use of the “Mayhem” name and logo closely resembles the trademark he established in the 1980s.
Biolos began using the “Mayhem” logo on surfboards and apparel in 1986, and the brand has become synonymous with surf culture over the past four decades. He expressed concern when he noticed Gaga’s new album, titled “Mayhem,” and its associated merchandise featured a logo strikingly similar to his own. According to Surfer, Gaga could face a $100 million fine if found guilty of trademark infringement.
The lawsuit, filed in California district court, alleges that Gaga’s actions could mislead the public into thinking her merchandise is associated with Lost International. The complaint, as reported by People, states that Gaga’s team ignored a cease and desist order from Biolos.
Biolos explained to Stab Magazine that the issue arose when he saw Gaga’s merchandise featuring the “Mayhem” name in a design similar to his own. Despite the legal action, Gaga’s attorney, Orin Snyder, dismissed the lawsuit as “opportunistic and meritless.”
The case is expected to proceed to trial, with Biolos seeking damages for the alleged infringement. Meanwhile, Lady Gaga’s “Mayhem” album continues to top charts, and she is set to embark on her “The Mayhem Ball” tour in July.
