A potentially dangerous situation unfolded at Righetti High School in Santa Barbara County on Monday when a School Resource Deputy confiscated a loaded handgun from a student. The incident began around 1:30 p.m. when school staff reported to a school deputy that a male student might be smoking marijuana in a bathroom. Upon confronting the student, the deputy faced resistance as the student attempted to walk away. A struggle ensued, during which the deputy sustained minor injuries, including a cut on his finger and an abrasion on his elbow.
During the arrest process, deputies discovered multiple marijuana vapes and a loaded .22 caliber revolver hidden in the student’s backpack. The student, whose identity has not been released, was transported to a local hospital for medical clearance before being booked into Santa Maria Juvenile Hall. He faces charges including possessing a firearm on school grounds, resisting arrest, and possession of marijuana on school grounds by a person under 18.
The swift response by the school staff and the deputy ensured that the firearm was confiscated before any harm could occur. The Santa Maria Joint Union High School District emphasized the importance of student safety in a statement, assuring the community that they are working closely with law enforcement to address the situation.
