A stray dog in Brea bravely fought off a pack of five coyotes earlier this month. The dramatic encounter, which lasted 45 minutes, was captured on video and shared on Nextdoor and KTLA. The incident occurred on May 6 around 5:40 a.m. on Huntley Circle near the 57 freeway.
The video shows a young dog, not wearing a collar, standing its ground against the pack of coyotes in the driveway of a home. The homeowner, Steve Shatynski, was unaware of the attack until it ended. “I pounded on [the window] as my garage door opened. About five or six coyotes appeared from different directions and headed up our hill,” Shatynski wrote in an email to KTLA.
Despite the attack, the dog appeared unharmed and was seen in the neighborhood for the next few days. Shatynski attempted to catch the dog but eventually contacted Brea police for assistance. The dog was captured by a private trapper and taken to a local shelter, where it is now available for adoption.
The incident has raised concerns among pet owners about the increasing presence of coyotes in the area. Animal control officials advise residents to keep pets indoors, especially at night or early morning when coyotes are most active. They also recommend removing food sources and using motion-activated lights to deter wildlife.
Residents are encouraged to report coyote sightings and share information to help maintain neighborhood safety. For more information on reducing human-coyote conflicts, visit the California Department of Fish and Wildlife website.
