Storm to Bring 25% of L.A.’s Annual Rainfall in Days

The powerful storm sweeping through Southern California could potentially deliver up to 25% of Los Angeles’ annual rainfall within just a few days. As of Friday morning, the storm had brought only 0.02 inches of rain, but forecasters predict several inches will fall by the end of the weekend. According to KTLA meteorologist Henry DiCarlo, projected rainfall totals include 2.76 inches in Riverside, 3.03 inches in Santa Ana, and 4.13 inches in downtown Los Angeles, which typically receives about 17 inches annually.

While the rainfall is beneficial, it also poses risks, particularly in areas affected by previous fires. Thunderstorms expected over burn scar areas on Saturday could lead to mudflows and mudslides. Evacuation warnings are in place for residents in vulnerable areas, including Eaton, Palisades, Canyon, Bethany, Hurst, Kenneth, Sunset, Lidia, Franklin, and Bridge, through Sunday morning.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a flood watch for most of Southern California, with expectations of 2 to 5 inches of rain across the region and up to 8 inches in mountain areas. Another storm is anticipated to arrive on Monday, with additional rain possible by Thursday, increasing the potential for flooding and debris flows.

Residents are advised to prepare for possible evacuations and to stay informed through local emergency alerts.
