Spencer Pratt Criticizes L.A. Times Over Residency Report

Los Angeles mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt has strongly criticized a report by the Los Angeles Times questioning his residency status.

The report raised concerns about whether Pratt is living within Los Angeles city limits, a requirement for candidacy in the upcoming June 2 primary election. Pratt, whose home was destroyed in the Palisades Fire, expressed his frustration on social media, stating, “They want to try and write a hit piece about me about my residence? They want to attack me for not living in the Palisades while running for mayor. Hey, brain surgeon, my house burned down.”

According to the Los Angeles Times, Pratt acknowledged living in Carpinteria in Santa Barbara County, after his home was destroyed. He claims his legal residence remains the burned-out lot in the Palisades, where he plans to live in an Airstream trailer. Pratt and his wife, Heidi, have listed a Carpinteria address as their mailing address on voter registrations.

The residency issue has become a focal point in Pratt’s campaign, which has been critical of Mayor Karen Bass and Governor Gavin Newsom’s handling of the Palisades Fire. Pratt, a former reality TV star known for his role on “The Hills,” announced his candidacy on the fire’s anniversary, aiming to bring attention to the city’s response to the disaster.

Pratt’s campaign has gained traction, with a recent poll by the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs placing him in second place behind Bass. However, questions about his residency could lead to legal challenges. Loyola Marymount University law professor Jessica Levinson noted that rival campaigns might hesitate to challenge Pratt due to the sensitivity surrounding his loss in the fire.

Despite the controversy, Pratt remains a prominent figure in the race, leveraging his social media presence and public profile to connect with voters. The primary election will determine if Pratt advances to the November 3 general election.
