An Iowa man is accused of shooting his father in the face during an argument over “stinky feet,” according to police.
David Carpenter, 48, was charged with attempted murder and child endangerment in relation to the shooting, which he admitted took place while his child was present in the room, KCRG reports. Burlington Police Department officers responded to a report of gunshots fired at the family’s home at around 9:30 p.m. on Sunday (August 11), the Madison Daily Democrat reported.
William Carpenter told police that the incident stemmed from an intense argument after he told his son that his “feet stink.” David said he made a comment about shooting his father as the argument escalated before going into his bedroom and grabbing a firearm, walking back into the living room where his father was sitting in a motorized scooter and continuing to yell at his father about guns, KCRG reported.
David then reportedly pulled the firearm out from behind his back and pointed it at his father’s face, at which point he claims he accidentally pulled the trigger. Two children under the age of 14 were present at the home at the time of the shooting, including David’s son, who he said was in the living room watching television during the argument.
David was taken to the Des Moines County Jail, where he’s currently being held on a $100,000 cash-only bond. William was treated at a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
A preliminary hearing for the case is scheduled to be held at the Des Moines County Courthouse on August 21 and an investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
