Southern California grocery workers from Albertsons, Pavilions, Ralphs, and Vons resumed contract negotiations on Wednesday. The United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) union, representing approximately 45,000 workers, has accused these stores of unfair labor practices, including surveillance and intimidation, to hinder workers’ efforts to secure a fair contract. The union has authorized an unfair labor practices strike, with members overwhelmingly voting in favor earlier this month.
The union plans a large practice strike on Friday at a Ralphs store in downtown Los Angeles. According to the Orange County Register, the UFCW is pushing for living wages, affordable healthcare, and a reliable pension, while the stores have begun hiring temporary replacements in preparation for a possible strike.
Courtney Carranza, spokesperson for Albertsons, Pavilions, and Vons, called the allegations “without merit” and stated the companies are committed to productive discussions. Ralphs echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that the best outcomes are achieved at the bargaining table.
The workers’ contracts expired on March 2, and negotiations will continue through Friday. The union remains firm in its demands for improved working conditions and fair wages. UFCW Local 324 has stated that the companies’ actions have stalled progress at the bargaining table, and they are prepared to strike if necessary to achieve a fair contract.
