Small Plane Crash in San Diego Sets 15 Homes on Fire

A small plane crashed into the Tierrasanta neighborhood of San Diego early Thursday, igniting fires in about 15 homes and several vehicles. The Cessna 550 went down around 3:45 a.m. near Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The crash occurred in the area of Sculpin Street and Santo Road, prompting evacuations and road closures, including on northbound Interstate 15.

San Diego Fire-Rescue Division Chief Dan Eddy reported that multiple cars were engulfed in flames, and jet fuel was spread across the area. Hazmat teams were deployed to manage the situation. “The main goal moving forward is to ensure all those houses are cleared and no one is inside,” Eddy told KNSD, adding that they are working with the military to address the incident.

The San Diego Police Department confirmed the crash and urged residents to avoid the area to allow emergency crews to work safely. Although the exact number of people on board the plane remains unknown, no residents have been reported dead or hospitalized. Both the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.
