A Cessna 550 private jet crashed into a San Diego neighborhood early Thursday, killing all six people aboard. The jet, which included a music talent agent and five others, struck a power line in foggy weather before crashing into a home near Salmon Street in the Murphy Canyon neighborhood. The crash occurred just before 4 a.m. as the plane was preparing to land at Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that six passengers were on board, and local officials reported no survivors. The crash resulted in multiple homes catching fire, prompting the evacuation of at least 100 residents from the military housing neighborhood. Eight people on the ground suffered non-life-threatening injuries, including smoke inhalation and minor injuries from escaping their homes.
Among those killed were Dave Shapiro, co-founder of Sound Talent Group, and two of his employees. Shapiro’s company represented well-known artists like Hanson and Vanessa Carlton. Former drummer for The Devil Wears Prada, Daniel Williams, was also on board, according to KCCI.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has begun an investigation into the crash, focusing on the plane’s altimeter settings and the lack of communication with a local tower. The jet was on a flight from Teterboro, New Jersey, with a fuel stop in Wichita, Kansas, before heading to San Diego. According to NBC San Diego, the plane crashed about two miles southeast of the airport.
The crash left a trail of destruction, with vehicles and homes severely damaged by fire and jet fuel. Residents described the scene as horrific, with flames and smoke filling the area. NTSB investigators plan to gather evidence at the site over the next few days.
