Small Plane Carrying Hurricane Relief Supplies To Jamaica Crashes

A small plane headed to Jamaica for Hurricane Melissa relief efforts crashed into a waterway in Coral Springs, Florida, on Monday (November 10). The Beech B100 aircraft went down at approximately 10:19 a.m. behind homes in the Windsor Bay neighborhood, according to the National Transportation Safety Board and the Coral Springs Fire Department.

The plane, registered to International Air Services, Inc. in Carson City, Nevada, was en route to Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, Jamaica. The crash occurred about five minutes after takeoff from Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport. Fortunately, no one on the ground was injured, and no houses were hit, but it remains unclear how many people were on board or if there were any casualties.

The relief flight was part of ongoing efforts to support Jamaica following the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa, which made landfall on October 28 as a Category 5 storm. The hurricane resulted in over 30 deaths and damaged 100,000 housing structures in Jamaica, according to the United Nations. Direct Relief, an organization actively involved in the recovery efforts, recently delivered more than 16 tons of medical aid to Jamaica to bolster the country’s health services, as detailed by Direct Relief.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash, and a dive team has been deployed to the scene. However, they have not yet recovered the plane or any victims.
