Six Innocent People Killed in SoCal Police Pursuits This Week

This week, six innocent people, including an unborn baby, tragically lost their lives in three separate police pursuits across Orange and Los Angeles counties.

The most recent incident occurred in Pomona on Wednesday, where a domestic violence suspect’s attempt to evade police resulted in a fatal crash.

The Pomona Police Department reported that the suspect, identified as 31-year-old Marshall Judson, was involved in a domestic violence case. Upon returning to the scene, he struck a parked patrol car and fled, initiating a police chase. The pursuit ended when Judson collided with a passenger vehicle on Garey Avenue, killing Marc Anthony Trejo and his pregnant girlfriend, Jennifer Alejandra Loera Zarco. Zarco was over eight months pregnant, making the loss even more devastating for their families.

Judson was arrested and faces multiple charges, including vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence. Inside his vehicle, police found a firearm and components, and he was driving without a valid license, according to a Pomona Police Department Facebook post.

In addition to the Pomona incident, a police pursuit in San Clemente involving a stolen U-Haul van resulted in one woman’s death and critically injured three others. Another chase in Anaheim led to the deaths of a 70-year-old man and a teenager when a teen driver, pursued for erratic driving, ran a red light.

These incidents have reignited debates over the necessity and safety of high-speed police pursuits. While some argue that such chases endanger the public, others contend that officers must make difficult, split-second decisions to prevent further harm. National Today highlighted the ongoing discussions about pursuit policies and the balance between public safety and apprehending suspects.

As law enforcement agencies in Southern California review and adjust their pursuit policies, these tragic events underscore the need for careful consideration of the risks involved in police chases.
