Sinners, Ryan Coogler’s vampire epic set in the Jim Crow South, made Oscar history Thursday by earning a record 16 Academy Award nominations, leading all films for the 98th Oscars.
The previous nominations record stood at 14, shared by La La Land (2016), Titanic (1997) and All About Eve (1950). Of those, only La La Land failed to win best picture.
Trailing close behind Sinners was One Battle After Another with 13 nominations. Frankenstein, Marty Supreme and Sentimental Value each scored nine nods, while Hamnet earned eight.
The nominations were announced via early-morning livestream from the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. The Oscars will be handed out on March 15 at the Dolby Theatre with host Conan O’Brien.
