COMPTON (CNS) – An investigation was continuing Friday into deputies’ fatal shooting of a 30-year-old man who was allegedly firing shots at a sheriff’s helicopter from a Compton-area rooftop.
Deputies were called to the 14600 block of Cahita Avenue near Rosecrans Avenue — in an unincorporated area bordering Compton — around 7:45 p.m. Thursday regarding a man who was possibly “under the influence” and armed with a shotgun in the rear yard of a home. There were reports that the man had already fired some shots, according to the sheriff’s department.
Arriving deputies initially spotted the man in the backyard of the home, but he eventually made his way onto the roof.
“Deputies ordered the suspect numerous times to surrender, but he refused to comply,” according to a sheriff’s department statement. “A sheriff’s department helicopter arrived on scene and reported that the suspect was armed with a shotgun. They reported that the suspect was firing the weapon in their direction.”
Sheriff’s homicide Lt. Steven De Jong told reporters, “Ultimately, four to six rounds were fired at the helicopter,” noting that the helicopter was struck at least once.
With the suspect continuing to fire, two sheriff’s deputies on the ground opened fire at the suspect, who was struck and pronounced dead at the scene.
He was later identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner as Jerman Magana of Compton.
No deputies were injured.
Sheriff’s homicide detectives remained at the scene throughout the night, searching the scene for additional evidence.
