A shark sighting led to a temporary closure of a portion of Redondo Beach on Monday evening. The Los Angeles County Lifeguards confirmed the sighting of a shark “exhibiting aggressive behavior” just south of the Redondo Pier. According to the Daily Breeze, lifeguards observed the shark eating a sea lion, which prompted the beach evacuation around 4:45 p.m.
The beach was closed within a mile of the sighting, extending south from the Ruby Lifeguard Tower. The closure lasted until approximately 7 p.m., when officials on rescue boats and beach lifeguards confirmed no further shark activity in the area. An update from KTLA stated that lifeguards will continue to monitor the situation and have asked beachgoers to report any further shark sightings to @lacolifeguards.
The sighting, which occurred around 5 p.m., caused concern among beachgoers, but the swift response from lifeguards ensured safety. The Los Angeles County Fire Department’s ocean lifeguard specialist, Natalie Mohagen, confirmed that no additional shark activity was observed after the initial sighting.
