A fisherman is in critical condition after he was bitten on the arm by a shark. The Nassau County Sheriff’s Office said that the man was with a group of people fishing on a boat in the Amelia River near the Florida-Georgia border when they caught a shark.
As they reeled in the shark, it lunged and bit the man in the arm.
“When he got it up out of the water, it lunged and grabbed a hold of his forearm,” Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper said. “Which had a pretty bad bite, lost a lot of blood. So he’s in serious condition.”
A marine patrol responded to the boat’s call for help. A quick-thinking deputy boarded the boat and likely saved the man’s life.
“Acting swiftly, a deputy boarded the vessel and applied a tourniquet to stop the bleeding,” the sheriff’s office said. “The deputy then piloted the boat to the Dee Dee Bartels boat ramp, where Fernandina Beach Fire Rescue was waiting.”
The man was then airlifted to the hospital and is expected to survive.
