A severe weather system is poised to impact millions across the Northern Plains and Midwest today (Tuesday, June 9). The Storm Prediction Center has issued a level three out of five risk for severe thunderstorms across parts of Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Nebraska. This system brings the potential for large hail, damaging wind gusts, and tornadoes.
According to Ryan Hall, Y’all, the atmosphere remains volatile after a 113 mph wind gust in Kansas. The severe weather threat is expected to move eastward, reaching the Upper Midwest by Wednesday (June 10), affecting areas like Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa. Residents in cities such as Bismarck, Fargo, and Sioux Falls should remain vigilant as the storms develop in the afternoon and continue into the evening.
The National Weather Service forecasts numerous severe thunderstorms with potential wind gusts of 60-80 mph, large hail, and possible tornadoes. By Wednesday, the severe weather risk extends into the Upper Mississippi Valley, including Minneapolis, Madison, and the Chicago suburbs.
As the system progresses, there is a heightened risk for strong tornadoes and significant hail, especially in the Upper Midwest. The public is advised to have multiple ways to receive weather warnings and to secure outdoor items.
