Scientists Update Magnetic North Pole’s Position As It Continues To Move

Earth’s magnetic north pole has shifted again, moving closer to Siberia and away from its previous position in Canada. This shift has significant implications for global navigation systems, which rely on the magnetic north for accurate orientation. The World Magnetic Model (WMM) 2025, released by the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) and the British Geological Survey (BGS), forecasts changes in Earth’s magnetic field for the next five years.

The magnetic north pole has been drifting at an accelerated pace, moving tens of kilometers annually due to the motion of molten iron in Earth’s outer core. This movement has caused the pole to shift from the Canadian Arctic toward Siberia. The updated WMM 2025 reflects these changes and provides critical data for navigation systems used by aircraft, ships, and smartphones.

The magnetic north pole differs from the geographic North Pole, which remains fixed. The magnetic pole is determined by Earth’s magnetic field, which is constantly shifting. This dynamic nature of the magnetic field makes predictions challenging, necessitating periodic updates to models like the WMM. The WMM is updated every five years to ensure accuracy, with the latest revision confirming the pole’s continued drift toward Russia.
