A school bus carrying 42 students and one adult from the Leander Independent School District rolled over on its side in Austin, Texas, on Wednesday (August 13), injuring 12 people. The accident occurred around 3:15 p.m. on Nameless Road in Travis County. Emergency services responded promptly, transporting the injured to a local hospital, with one individual sustaining life-threatening injuries and two others potentially facing life-threatening conditions.
The bus, a 2024 model equipped with state-regulated seatbelts, was primarily transporting students from Bagdad Elementary School.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, but the bus reportedly veered off the road “for an unknown reason,” as stated by Department of Public Safety Sgt. Billy Ray. The Independent reported that the driver was among those hospitalized.
Leander Independent School District Superintendent Bruce Gearing expressed the community’s sorrow, especially following recent floods in the area. He assured families of the district’s support, stating, “We want each of those students and their families to know that our prayers are with them, our thoughts are with them, and we will do everything that we can in our power to support them.”
A reunification center was set up at Round Mountain Baptist Church for families to reconnect with their children. The investigation into the crash is ongoing, and officials are working to determine the exact cause of the accident.
