The Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD) is set to enhance security in the downtown district with the opening of a new substation on the ground floor of the Santa Monica Place Mall. This 863-square-foot facility is part of the city’s Realignment Plan, which aims to restore public confidence and vibrancy in the area.
According to FOX LA, the substation will serve as a hub for officers to coordinate operations, respond quickly to incidents, and maintain partnerships with downtown stakeholders. The city plans to double its foot and bike patrol staff and add three to five extra patrol officers daily.
City Manager Oliver Chi emphasized that the initiative represents a visible commitment to safety and proactive policing. Acting Police Chief Darrick Jacob highlighted the strategic focus on partnership, presence, and prevention.
Santa Monica Next reports that the substation will open later this fall, with full staffing phased in by early 2026. The plan includes integrating a homeless liaison program and adding public safety officers to provide non-emergency response and support for law enforcement.
This initiative is expected to revitalize Santa Monica’s downtown, making it a safer and more vibrant destination for residents, businesses, and visitors.
