Santa Monica Considers Public Drinking on Third Street Promenade

Santa Monica city councilmembers are considering a proposal to allow public drinking on the Third Street Promenade. If approved, the proposal would enable businesses with existing alcohol licenses to serve beverages that customers could carry around in designated areas while shopping or enjoying the promenade’s atmosphere.

The proposal is part of a broader effort to boost the local economy in the post-COVID era. Supporters believe it could significantly benefit downtown businesses. Andrew Thomas, CEO of Downtown Santa Monica Inc., told KTLA, “I think it’s the biggest thing that’s happened to the promenade since the promenade was built.”

The plan builds on a bill signed by Governor Gavin Newsom that allows cities to create “entertainment zones,” where public drinking is permitted. The proposed entertainment zone would stretch from Wilshire Boulevard to Colorado Avenue, encompassing three blocks of the promenade.

According to the Santa Monica Mirror, the plan includes strict regulations, such as requiring businesses to serve drinks in non-glass, non-metal containers and issuing wristbands for age verification. The zone would be monitored by increased law enforcement and barriers at entry points.

While some locals express concern about potential chaos, others believe it could be a positive change if managed properly. The city council will revisit the proposal at their next meeting in May.
