SANTA CLARITA (CNS) – A brush fire in the Santa Clarita area was contained at about 76 acres and six firefighters battling the blaze were treated for minor to moderate heat-related illnesses, authorities said Saturday.
The Plenty Fire was reported at around 4 p.m. Friday in the area of Copper Hill Drive and Haskell Canyon Road, according to a Los Angeles County Fire Department official.
Responding crews estimated the blaze at 40 acres, with the potential to grow to more than 100 acres. But an hour later, crews reported good progress in slowing the fire’s forward progress.
By 8:04 p.m. Friday, officials said the fire’s progress had been stopped at roughly 76 acres.
No structures were threatened.
About an hour into the effort, one firefighter was taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital after complaining of weakness and dizziness due to the heat. A second firefighter was also overcome with heat-related issues at around 5:30 p.m. and another a short time later, a department official said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, but an official said it may have been sparked by a burning vehicle amid high heat
