Authorities in Santa Barbara County are searching for Melodee Buzzard, a nine-year-old girl who has not been seen for at least a year. The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office began the search on Tuesday after a school official reported Melodee’s prolonged absence. Melodee, who is homeschooled, has not checked in since October 2024, according to the sheriff’s office.
When deputies visited her home on Tuesday, neither Melodee nor her mother, Ashlee Buzzard, were present, and no clear explanation was provided for Melodee’s whereabouts. The following day, deputies returned to the home and found Ashlee Buzzard there, but Melodee was still missing. No one else resides at the residence.
The last confirmed sighting of Melodee was approximately one year ago, and the most recent photograph of her was taken two years ago. The sheriff’s office has released this photo to assist in the search and is urging anyone with information to come forward. “Even small details may be critical in helping investigators ensure her safety,” the sheriff’s office stated in a news release.
Authorities have not yet determined if foul play is involved or if Melodee’s disappearance is suspicious, but she is currently considered “at-risk.” Anyone with information can contact the sheriff’s department at 805-681-4150 or submit tips anonymously at 805-681-4171 or SBSheriff.org.
