The San Gabriel Valley Humane Society has issued a warning about a scam targeting families who have lost their pets. Scammers are reportedly spoofing the shelter’s phone number, making it appear as though the calls are coming from the Humane Society itself. These scammers falsely claim to have found the lost pets and then demand payment through apps like Zelle, Venmo, Cash App, or Apple Pay to reunite the pets with their owners.
The Humane Society emphasized in a social media post that they would never request payment over the phone or through a payment app. “Your trust and your pet’s safety are our top priorities. Stay vigilant, and help us spread the word to protect others,” the post stated.
The shelter encourages the public to remain cautious and report any suspicious activity. As the scam continues to affect pet owners, the Humane Society is working to raise awareness and prevent further incidents.
